In my first-year film, my main goal was to create a close relationship to music and animation, similar to the relationship between dance and music. I have been inspired by “lyrical” dance and Disney’s musical animations to create an animation that moves along to the music but also tells a story. I review my process of creating an intimate relationship between animation and dance by looking specifically at how I developed the story in relation to the music and how I implemented individual movements to match the music. The film has a story based on a song, and the movement within the film was determined by analyzing choreography from a dance made to the song. While I was able to create a close relationship between the animation and music, I found that in some ways the story and the movements competed with the music. I realized that instead of trying to create an animation that matches up to the same level of intensity as the music, it would be more successful to consider how the animation can complement the music and vice versa.
